Welcome to day 1 of the "12 Days of a DIY Christmas" series & link party! I introduced this party to you on Tuesday {click
HERE if you missed it!} so I hope you have had some time to get ready to link away {see
THIS POST for a more thorough explanation on linking up}. The series will continue every day until December 12th.
If you are on Pinterest, or enjoy perusing blogs, I'm sure you have heard of faux mercury glass...it is all the rave right now. So, of course I had to give it a try!
They are super fun {and hard to photograph! Check out all three of me} and can either have a sleek, modern look, or you can lightly age it to give it a more vintage feel {I chose the vintage}.
Want to know how? Here is what you'll need:
Got all your stuff together?
Pour in your black paint or glaze and swish 'n' swirl 'n' shake...or anything you have to do to get the inside covered. If there are a few spots that you can't get, don't sweat it. All I'm going to say is that our neighbors already think I'm a nut, so I didn't care what I had to do.
I honestly used a glaze because that's what I had on hand. If I would have had black craft paint, I probably would have rather used that...it's definitely cheaper & you could probably water it down a little to help it go farther.
It's a little messy, so I took this one outside.
After I had coated the insides of all of the ornaments, I got to work spraying the outside down with the looking glass spray paint. I sprayed a couple of light coats on one {waiting a minute or so in between coats...but who was counting?}, and then I sprayed it with the half vinegar/half water mixture...let that sit for approximately a minute, and then dabbed it off with a paper towel.
I only did a few balls at a time so that I wouldn't lose track of time.
Hmmm...note to self: Wear gloves next time if you don't want metallic nails!
I let them sit out and dry overnight before I put the little caps back on.
I figured up that it cost me roughly about $0.40 to make each ornament. Pottery Barn's mercury glass ornaments were my inspiration, and they are $5 each.
