Well, it's been a while since I've posted anything around here! Although I haven't been posting, I have been keeping up with my favorite blogs (Google Reader is my friend) and doing a lot of pinning on Pinterest (my new-found love). If you follow me on Pinterest, you already know that I've been spending a lot of time on there! I've discovered lots of fun projects that I've been itching to try. One of them is the fun and simple project of dying clear mason jars. I found a great tutorial by Lucy at Craftberry Bush. So, I decided to try it myself. Here's what I came up with:
The two on the right are still a little streaky and that's because I was rushing and didn't wait to take the picture until they were completely dry.
Here are the products you will need
Mod Podge (or glue)
Food coloring
Paint Brush
Clean jar
1 teaspoon of mod podge + 1 1/2 teaspoons of water
3 drops of food coloring
I didn't have a paint brush on hand, so I used an old eye shadow brush :)
This mixture is enough to coat lots of jars! Oh and have fun playing with the color! (2 drops of blue + 1 drop of green makes a beautiful teal)
Apply evenly to either the outside or the inside. As you can imagine, this is not a permant dye - which is both good and bad! If you want to use it as a flower vase, apply the concoction to the outside and be careful when you fill it with water!
A little side-by-side comparison
I found that the darker the color, the more the streaks showed. I did this one in a hurry and it obviously shows :)
This was my favorite project. As you can see, the dye isn't limited to mason jars! The base was black metal and I painted it in Old White with Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint. The bluer hue of the glass looks great with the white base. Now this piece matches my kitchen.
I've been doing some research on a more permant way to "dye" glass. I'll share my findings with you in another post!
